Elisha and the Ax Head

Posted on December 29, 2005by

2 Kings 6:4-6 And he went with them. They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. 5 As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh, my lord,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!” 6 The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float.

Have you ever read a portion the Bible and asked yourself , “What does that have to do with anything?” Here is one of those passages for me. The first time that I heard this was in a chapel service at Faith the day of the groundbreaking ceremony for the Convo addition. Imagine this we are getting ready to break ground for the addition and I don’t remember who stands up and says something like, “As Dr. Littleton did at the groundbreaking for the Faith Baptist Bible College when it moved here from Omaha, so I read as we break ground on this Convo addition: And he went with them. They went to the Jordan and began to cut down trees. As one of them was cutting down a tree, the iron axhead fell into the water. “Oh, my lord,” he cried out, “it was borrowed!” The man of God asked, “Where did it fall?” When he showed him the place, Elisha cut a stick and threw it there, and made the iron float.” No explanation, nothing. He read the passage and we broke ground.

Now can you imagine the confusion of the student body by this point. What does a floating ax head have to do with this convocation addition? Now I have heard weird things from the pulpit at Faith, but nothing as weird as this. Until today. I started a study on the Cross of Christ and in the first day of this study, there it was. This passage again. Again my confusion exceedingly overwhelmed me (yes for you people who know me, I used the word “exceedingly” and probably spelled “overwhelmed” wrong). It asked me three questions and I answered them the best I could. An axe fell into the water. A stick was thrown into the water. The ax head started floating. What else is there to see in that passage. But that is exactly, I think, the study wanted me to see. In order to know my Savior more I have to look deeper than the surface stuff. I am passed bottles and baby food. It is time for a nice steak. Here is what one person thought of when they looked into this passage.

“We like the ax head have fallen into the sinful nature of this world and are sunk in sin. Christ redeemed us and restroed us back to God through the cross. Just as the ax head floated up to the surface, so are we who are dead in our sin but then raised like Christ, in Christ, by Christ, and through Christ.”

This passage meant something totally different to me. It was showing me my fallen state. I was sunk and still find myself sunken into sin, especially within the last few days. But the cross of Christ (the stick) was where my life changed. Do you understand the impossibilities that an ax head has at floating, let alone floating when a stick is thrown at it? It is almost comical. But it is almost comical to think that we could ever be saved from the sin that we sunk in with out help. Something as simple as placing my trust in the cross of Christ will allow me to start floating. Now that is AWESOME!!!
